The prestigious Scody Australian Open Road Cycling Championships will again be held in Ballarat in January 2008.

Affectionately known amongst Australia's elite cyclists as "the Nationals", this year's event is expected to attract a world class field of Olympic Games medalists, Commonwealth Games medalists and of course Australia's Tour de France stars.

The 10.2km Buninyong circuit is without doubt the ideal course to determine Australia's best male and female road cyclists, with challenging climbs, fast winding downhills and a tough flat sprint to the line.

A variety of viewing areas providing up close access to riders, has enabled a "Europen-type" feel to the event, with 15,000 spectators expected to flock to the grand finale - the Men's Open Road Race on Sunday.

L’anno olimpico aggiunge ulteriore interesse ai Campionati Nazionali Australiani

Con i Giochi Olimpici di Pechino 2008 all’orizzonte, i migliori ciclisti australiani scenderanno in forze a Ballarat, nel Victoria State, per la settimana dei Campionati Australiani su strada, in quanto, oltre ad aggiudicarsi i rispettivi titoli, sarà anche un’opportunità per avvicinarsi alla nomina nella squadra olimpica australiana.

Siccome ci sono dei punti in palio per la qualificazione Olimpica, senza considerare che la maglia di campione nazionale darà un ritorno commerciale alle squadre professionistiche con base in Europa, la corsa nazionale schiererà quest’anno al via un gran numero di stelle del ciclismo.

Anche se ci si limita agli atleti più importanti di un solo paese, può essere considerato l’inizio non ufficiale della stagione su strada, dato che si sono dei punti UCI in palio e considerato lo spessore dei partecipanti di questo fine settimana.

All’evento ci saranno la considerevole cifra di 367 corridori nelle sei gare previste, con quasi tutti i grandi d’Australia ed alcuni atleti di fama internazionale. La possibilità di una dura battaglia in ogni categoria ha elettrizzato l’organizzatore John Craven.

"Cadel Evans e Robbie McEwen sono gli unici grandi nomi non presenti," ha detto Craven a The Courier. "Lo spessore del ciclismo australiano è fenomenale. Ed abbiamo avuto una fantastica risposta da parte dei corridori."

"Si preannuncia uno spettacolo sensazionale," ha aggiunto Craven. "Ci sono tutti gli ingredienti per delle fantastiche gare tra le migliori donne ed i migliori uomini d’Australia," ha concluso Craven.

Le condizioni meteo svolgeranno indubbiamente un ruolo importante nell’esito delle competizione di questa settimana, con i corridori che si aspettano buone e calde temperature, che partiranno da 34 gradi per le cronometro Elite donne e Under 23 uomini del mercoledì.

Si attendono le stesse condizioni anche per le corse su strada, con gli Under 23 uomini e l’Elite donne che si disputeranno sabato, 12 gennaio e l’Elite uomini di 162,3 chilometri la domenica.

Il circuito di 10,2 chilometri di Buninyong è molto selettivo e una corsa dura proporrà probabilmente uno sprint di un piccolo gruppo. Non dovrebbe andare in modo diverso.

Craven dice di aspettarsi un folto pubblico che farà una gita a Ballarat da Melbourne, in quanto la capitale del Victoria State è a circa un’ora di auto..

KING TAKES TITLE

Darwin cyclist Matt King (SouthAustralia.com-AIS) claimed the U23 men's time trial in a nail biter, defeating his SouthAustralia.com-AIS team mate Ben King (WA) by less than a second, with multiple junior track World Champion with Travis Meyer (WA) third completing a SouthAustralia.com-AIS trifecta.

Matt King was aggressive from the start notching a 20 second lead at the top of the first climb, approximately five kilometres into the event. However, Ben King put in a strong second half to almost bridge the gap.

“I had my family shouting at the finish line so I knew it must be close so I just buried myself," said the winner. "But this is just too close for comfort and I won the Thuringen Rundfahrt time trial (German stage race) by 0.6 of a second in 2007 so this is not good for the nerves.

“I am proud to be a Territorian, the first Territorian to win this event – it’s just great," said Matt King.

Woman with big engine' triumphs at Scody 2008 Australian Open Road Championships

Victorian Bridie O'Donnell has claimed her first Australian Championship with a convincing win in the 28 kilometre Mars Australian Women's Time Trial at the Scody 2008 Australian Open Road Championships near Ballarat in Victoria.

O'Donnell, an orthopedic surgeon who has worked with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and is a former rower and ironwoman, is a product of the Australian Sports Commission's 'Women with Big Engines' project that was created in September, 2006, to bolster Australia's chances for success in road time trial competition.

The 33 year old Victorian posted a time of 41min40.82sec, 15 seconds faster than of Athens Olympic Games road race champion, Queensland's Sara Carrigan (41:55.08) with South Australian Alexis Rhodes (High Road Sports) third in 41:55.59.

Her average speed of 40.32km/h was outside the required 44.8km/h set for automatic nomination to the Australian team for the Beijing Olympic Games but was impressive nonetheless. In August last year, she won the Victorian Championships also in Ballarat, and in December won the Oceania Title in New Zealand.

“Its never too late to win a national title I say," said O'Donnell. "There is so much emphasis on youth these days, but I think today I showed what potential women in their 30s have.

“I really believe that rowing and triathlon gave me strength and an ability to suffer, but I have also been coming up here every weekend for the past six weeks working on that hill, so I felt confident going in to today,” said O'Donnell who was the fastest over the first half of the Buninyong course and held her form to the finish line.

“I really wanted to win a national title," she said. "I felt for myself that the qualifying time they set was quite high and possibly unrealistic, so that pressure was off me, I just wanted to win and I feel really bloody proud.”

Carrigan, although disappointed with her result following recent hard training for the discipline with new coach Neil Ross, says she is already looking towards Saturday’s road race.

“For the first time we have two days recovery and the field is 90 something riders strong so I look forward to a great race," said Carrigan.

Rhodes was ecstatic with her bronze medal performance, less than a second behind Carrigan.

“To be so close to Sara who is such a great time trialler is a great honour," said Rhodes. "I am happy with my form and really stoked with my performance."

In the combined elite and U23 women's event Spratt was the eighth fastest but her time of 43:03.47 gave her the U23 title ahead of Queensland's Louise Kerr who posted 45:29.71 and Canberra's Katherine Baker (45:53.57).
